Mount Congreve Gardens have been closed for redevelopment for more than a year and I have missed our regular visits to the garden very much but the reopening is upon us and from Monday next, 31st October, the gardens will be open to the public again.
The late Mr. Ambrose Congreve extended the original house in the 1960s, adding a wing on either side with stable yards between the main house and the wings though clever architecture gave the appearance that it is was one large house as it had a continuous facade. During the recent redevelopment one of these yards was covered with a glass roof, the stables upgraded, to give a covered/indoor retail area with a giftshop, restaurant and coffee/sandwich/cake take-away facility. It will be a great addition to the visitor experience and will make Mount Congreve an even more attractive place to visit and a very nice place for locals to bring friends.
The new development: Take note of the central kiosk which is based on the pagoda in the garden.

It was especially good to walk around the woodland and enjoy the autumn colour. The main pathways in the garden, ones that give two main circular walks around the gardens, have been resurfaced and this makes walking more comfortable and general access easier. General maintenance has been ongoing in the woodland gardens during the closedown and they are looking very well.

Hi. I remember these gardens from some of your previous articles. You’ve missed the gardens, and the gardens have missed you!

It will be good to be back there again. We have purchased an annual pass which will allow us visit as frequently as we wish. The garden is about ten minutes away so very convenient.

Thanks for the heads up on the opening. That is a serious improvement to the shop and cafe! I liked the slightly shambolic old cafe but I can see that this will be a great attraction.
