What did I do today? Not much, really!
At first saying, it might sound as though I had a dull day, an unexciting day and, to a certain extent, I suppose that was the case but dull and and unexciting are perfectly fine with me. A day when nothing extraordinary happens is a good day.

It was a good day; good weather, warm and we pottered away in the garden. Yes, it was a pottering day today; not a day with a purpose to our gardening. There was no goal, no project to be finished; just a little light pottering.
We have been working in the garden all week, thanks to the wonderful weather of late, and are on top of our job! Today was a day for just gardening. I cleared the old dry foliage from around the base of a big astelia – why did we ever put an astelia in the garden. We had some years ago and got rid of them. I think this present one came as a gift and I imagine that is why the Head Gardener has allowed it. It is planted against the children’s playhouse, an out of the way place, not prominent but not quite thrown out.

I spread a little bark on a footpath, a spare bag left over from last year, and then lifted, split and replanted a few primulas, garden seedlings which I like and wanted to bulk up to see how they do in coming years. Given the heat of the day, they had to be very well watered and I’m glad to hear that we will have rain tomorrow which will help them along.

At lunchtime, I finished a jig-saw puzzle, a woodland view of a waterfall. Well, actually, Mary put in the last piece so I should admit that she finished it.

The potted dahlia tubers in the glasshouse are growing well and demand regular watering as do the 100 or so Iris unguicularis plants we potted up last summer. The rope of the clothes line had withered and frayed and I replaced it in the late afternoon. A group of cowslips caught my eye – the light hit them nicely – and I went for my camera and that brought any thoughts of further “work” to a close.

So, what did I do today? Nothing much, really but it was a very pleasant day, a day well spent enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing but still getting a lot done. I hope to have many more such days.

It is lovely to see your garden in all its Springtime glory … I especially love the primula/ primroses … really lifted my soul. I have a little shaded patch in my small cottage garden … which is full of lovely blooms just now. Some of which I brought from Ireland having taken your advice a few years ago. Stay safe and well … Happy Easter to you and yours.

The primulas are very rewarding plants. I lifted, split and replanted about 60 yesterday. They flagged after being planted but are all fresh again this morning. Happy Easter.

I’m enjoying sharing the colour and light in your beautiful Spring garden from our beach house on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, where our seaside garden is easing into Autumn. It’s beautiful too, but rather different. The blue and white agapanthus, lavenders and star jasmine have just finished, so for now, the garden’s emphasis is on textural elements and various shades of green. In the weeks to come, while some greens will remain at the silver end of the hue, others will turn to a burnished gold.
Keep safe and well, and have a very happy Easter!

And, I would love to see your garden, to see a garden in a different climate, a different approach, different selection of plants etc. Have a good Easter. Best wishes.

I’m happy that it has begun to spread a little after quite a few years. Paris quadrifolia, on the other hand, is a very strong grower here and has made a good sized patch. It isn’t in flower yet, just in bud.

Not much really? But it is these not much Ness days that add up…

What a lovely quiet calmness your post brings. I know you divide primulas most years and thought this morning it was a good reminder to me to set to such a task. Tomorrow, though, will be the day. Thanks for all the nice photos.

You have nicely captured one of the great joys of gardening, semi-productiveness, in which something is accomplished, not a great task, but still honest work, and enough to be able to affirm that today, at least, I wasn’t indolent, and yet enjoyed the time spent and the result, however small. Here’s to small pleasures.

Gardening, gardening at home, should be like that all the time, I suppose. It is a pastime, a hobby, something to be enjoyed and we would enjoy it best if approached with this attitude. Take care and be safe and healthy and enjoy the garden!
