A Preview rather than a Review!

“Orchid Summer” by Jon Dunn

A copy of Jon Dunn’s “Orchid Summer” arrived in this morning’s post. It is a book which has been well flagged on social media among native orchid enthusiasts – an account of orchid-seeking journeys around Great Britain and Ireland from the southern coast chalk downs of England to the moorlands of northern Scotland and from Northumberland on the east coast of England to The Burren on Ireland’s Atlantic coastline.

I went to the chapter on The Burren, an area with which I am familiar, as a short cut to assess a book. Well, Jon Dunn hit the nail on the head. He captured The Burren and the experience of searching for orchids there perfectly; described the area wonderfully and the whole chapter oozed with enthusiasm and joy in what he was doing. It was a pleasure to read and the rest of the book will be taken at leisure and enjoyed I have no doubt.

The publication date is tomorrow, 8th March, and copies are available direct from the publishers, Bloomsbury.

  1. When one thinks of all the books waiting for your perusal I think it’s a great idea to take a chapter on a place familiar to you and if that passes muster the remainder should be fine. Sounds interesting and engaging.

    1. Oh, I’m certainly going to read the rest of the book. I don’t like reading two books at the same time so simply took a lunchtime peep into this one as I had been waiting for it for a while.

Another plus – it’s well written!
